"It's Important that We Ignore Any Evidence that We're Wrong" Says Advocacy Group
In recent months, the archaic theory that the Earth is not an oblate spheroid, as science holds, but rather is flat has regained an unusual amount of popularity among Americans. Hip Hop artist B.o.B infamously sent out a series of tweets in which he seemed to assert his actual belief that the earth is flat.
In the wake of these tweets and the international exposure they yielded, a new advocacy group has arisen with the goal of reestablishing the centuries-old model of our planet being flat as the accepted scientific model to be taught to children in public school.
The group calls itself, Individuals Determined to Integrate Other Theories of Science, and like to be called by their organizational acronym: IDIOTS.
I sat down and interviewed the movement's leader, Bob O'Callahan.
"It's important that we ignore any evidence that we're wrong," O'Callahan told me. "We know we're right, and no amount of so-called scientific evidence can convince us otherwise."
I asked Mr. O'Callahan if he would change his mind if he could be sent into space and look down on the planet and see it was round, but Mr. O'Callahan was confident in his belief.
"There is no space," said Mr. O'Callahan. "All this so-called science they teach kids in school now is false. The bible says the Earth is 6000 years old. That's all the proof I need."
At this point, I took out my smart phone and showed Mr. O'Callahan the above photo and asked him what he thought of it.
"You're one of them sheep," said Mr. O'Callahan. "You believe everything you're told. I can tell you right now that that photo is fake. The earth is flat. if it were round, I would be able to see the curve from the roof of my house. I've gone up there just to be sure, and sure enough, the Earth is flat."
There is no telling how strong this revived movement can grow. It will be important to monitor it going forward to see how popular it becomes.
